What is breast reconstruction?

A so-called breast defect is a complete absence of breast skin and glandular tissue due to various causes. Causes of breast defects are most commonly seen after mastectomy for breast tumors, and can also be seen in cases of dysplasia or absence due to burns, trauma, infection, etc. As the standard of living continues to improve, people’s pursuit of beauty is also increasing day by day. Therefore, breast loss not only brings physical pain to patients, but also causes great mental burden; at the same time, it brings many inconveniences to their work, life and social activities. What can be done to solve the physical and mental pain of these patients? The most effective solution is to perform breast reconstruction. Breast reconstruction is the use of autologous tissue transplantation or implant placement to reconstruct a breast that is compatible with the healthy breast on the opposite side. There are three common methods: 1) breast implant placement; 2) back flap transfer with implant placement; 3) abdominal flap breast reconstruction. The specific choice of the method depends on the actual situation. Which patients with breast defects are suitable for breast reconstruction and when is the most appropriate time to do it? Generally speaking, breast reconstruction can be performed as long as the local and systemic conditions allow for all causes of breast defects. The timing of breast reconstruction depends on the cause of the breast defect: if it is a benign breast tumor, simple mastectomy or stage I or II breast cancer surgery, reconstructive surgery can be performed at the same time, so as to reduce the pain and economic loss caused by secondary surgery and anesthesia; if the breast defect is caused by breast dysplasia in early childhood or by trauma or burns, the surgery can be performed at a later stage after adulthood. In case of stage II or above breast cancer, reconstructive surgery is feasible after two years of postoperative observation and confirmation of no recurrence and metastasis. Some breast cancer patients worry whether breast reconstruction will lead to recurrence or metastasis of breast cancer? A lot of domestic and foreign studies have shown that: 1. breast reconstruction does not increase the recurrence and metastasis rate of breast cancer; 2. breast reconstruction does not affect the examination of local breast cancer recurrence; 3. breast reconstruction enhances women’s self-confidence and reduces their sense of inferiority after surgery; 4. it obviously increases the couple’s relationship compared with the non-reconstructed group of patients. It can be seen that breast reconstruction is the best way to solve the physical deformity and psychological burden caused by breast deficiency. Breast reconstruction also improves the quality of life of patients with breast loss. Women who have experienced the pain of breast loss should have the courage to choose breast reconstruction.
