What’s going on with empty toenails?

Empty toenails inside may be due to trauma, onychomycosis, psoriasis, nail dystrophy and other reasons.
1. trauma: when the toenail is smashed, extruded and other stronger trauma, it may lead to nail plate damage and become empty underneath the nail plate.
2. Onychomycosis: Fungal infection of the nail plate and subnail tissues leads to lesions of the toenail, which manifests as separation, thickening, atrophy, shedding, and uneven surface.
3. Psoriasis: when psoriasis involves the toenail, it may lead to unevenness of the nail plate, separation of the nail plate from the nail bed, which is manifested as hollowing of the inside of the toenail.
4. Nail malnutrition: congenital deformity, heredity, certain diseases (such as lichen planus, dry syndrome, etc.) and other factors, leading to changes in the texture and composition of the nail, which can be manifested as separation, atrophy, roughness, transverse grooves, longitudinal cracks and other symptoms.
Toenails inside the empty may also be due to other diseases, it is recommended that patients seek medical attention in a timely manner, in order to clarify the cause of the symptomatic treatment.
