Can you recover from a chemical burn to the eye?

Whether or not a chemically burned eye can be recovered depends on the specific case; some can be recovered and some cannot. Generally only some patients with mild chemical burns of the eye can recover, while severe chemical burns of the eye, especially when the whole eyeball is chemically burned, usually cannot be recovered. The degree of ocular chemical burns is related to the corrosiveness of the chemical substance and the length of contact with the eye: the epithelial cells of the conjunctiva and cornea are lipophilic, and the corneal stroma and sclera are hydrophilic. Therefore, water-soluble substances are not easy to penetrate the cornea and conjunctiva, eroded by water-soluble chemicals, not easy to penetrate to the deeper tissues again; fat-soluble chemicals erode the eye, can penetrate the cornea, resulting in damage to the inner eye structure. Patients with chemical burns to the eyes are advised to go to the nearest regular hospital as soon as possible, follow the doctor’s instructions for examination and treatment, and avoid blind treatment.
