How to distinguish between conjunctivitis and tear duct obstruction

Usually, both conjunctivitis and lacrimal duct obstruction may cause yellow eye discharge, and conjunctivitis is usually accompanied by congestion in the white of the eye and not much tearing. In the case of lacrimal duct obstruction, there is little to no congestion in the white of the eye, and often the tears are accompanied by yellow pus, which is typical of lacrimal duct obstruction causing dacryocystitis. The difference between conjunctivitis and lacrimal duct obstruction is mainly in the tearing and whether there is significant congestion in the whites of the eyes. Conjunctivitis and lacrimal duct obstruction can lead to bacterial infections, and the medication treatment is the same, with the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, such as levofloxacin drops or Topaz drops, being the mainstay.
