Why do anxiety sufferers feel dumber?

Many people with anxiety disorders feel that their memory is fading, they often lose things, their ability to learn is diminished, they are unable to think systematically and deeply, and their minds are a jumbled mess. Many elderly patients even fear that they have Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, the relationship between anxiety and competence is as follows: too little anxiety makes us lax, lazy, and lacking in enthusiasm. Moderate anxiety improves concentration, alertness, and stimulates optimal intellectual performance. However, patients with anxiety disorders are often unable to concentrate, have reduced thinking and acting power due to excessive anxiety, and in cases of severe anxiety, are unresponsive or even have a complete physical and mental breakdown.
