Can congenital mental retardation be cured?

Congenital mental retardation is not curable. Current congenital genetic disorders such as phenylketonuria and hypothyroidism can cause children to be born with mental retardation, or the patient can be born with mental retardation due to birth injuries and trauma after birth. Regardless of the type of mental retardation, the cause needs to be identified first. If the cause can be identified, treatment can be given to address the cause, sometimes delaying further reduction in intelligence or even improving it. Prenatal checkups or newborn screening can also be increased to reduce the birth rate of children with mental retardation and to increase the detection rate of newborns with mental retardation for early intervention and treatment.
