Patients have difficulty eating and choking on water as one of the manifestations of bulbar palsy, which may be caused by true bulbar palsy or pseudobulbar palsy. True bulbar palsy mainly refers to damage to the medulla oblongata area, which causes patients to have acute problems with eating and drinking and decreased swallowing function. In this case, the main treatment is for the primary disease, and later on, acupuncture can be used to help patients improve their symptoms. If the patient has chronic, slow onset symptoms of difficulty eating and choking on water, consider it to be caused by pseudobulbar palsy. The most common cause of pseudobulbar palsy is caused by multiple lacunar cerebral infarcts, where patients exhibit symptoms of difficulty eating and choking on water, in addition to other symptoms of multiple cerebral infarcts. For example, patients may have balance disorders, unstable walking, small gait, and difficulty controlling urine and stool. Therefore, patients with these problems must promptly find the cause and actively prevent the recurrence of cerebral infarction, and can also improve the symptoms of dysphagia through acupuncture in Chinese medicine.
