A 10mm pure ground glass nodule found on examination carries a certain risk of being a malignant tumor such as lung cancer, which is more serious, while if it is caused by a benign disease, it is mostly not serious.
Lung nodules are imaging findings of lung masses ≤3 cm, which can be categorized into solid nodules, pure ground-glass nodules, and mixed ground-glass nodules based on their composition. Pure ground glass nodules have a lower risk of malignancy than mixed ground glass nodules and a higher risk than solid nodules, with a malignancy rate of approximately 18%. The malignancy rate of a typical 8 to 20 mm pulmonary nodule is also around 15%.
Most of the 10mm pure ground-glass nodules are benign lung diseases such as pneumonia and sarcoidosis, which can be improved and cured by active anti-infection treatment, and only a few patients with severe pneumonia have serious conditions.
Pure ground-glass nodules of 10mm may be malignant tumors such as bronchopulmonary cancer, which are more serious and may be life-threatening, requiring radical surgery, radiotherapy, etc. However, since the lesions are small and mostly early stage lung cancers, active treatment may still have a better prognosis.
It is recommended that patients consult a specialist for a comprehensive analysis of the morphology, margins and calcification of the lesion, and follow the doctor’s instructions for further examination and treatment.
