Is surgery required for both sides of carotid stenosis?

Carotid artery stenosis is a relatively common disease, especially in the middle-aged and elderly population with high prevalence. It is a terrible disease, according to clinical statistics, more than 60% of ischemic strokes are caused by carotid stenosis, and severe ischemic strokes can lead to disability or even death of patients. Therefore, once suffering from carotid stenosis, it is important to pay attention to early detection, early intervention and early treatment. Carotid stenosis is mostly caused by atherosclerosis, which is also the most common cause. Especially in middle-aged and elderly people, due to the increase of age and aging of blood vessels, blood lipids are continuously deposited and attached to the walls of blood vessels, causing the carotid artery intima to thicken and gradually form plaques, blocking the carotid artery lumen, resulting in poor blood flow and affecting blood supply. Carotid artery stenosis may cause chronic ischemia of the brain, or it may cause cerebral infarction, which has terrible consequences. Therefore, once suffering from carotid stenosis, it should be treated as early as possible. Conservative medical treatment is generally recommended for mild stenosis, with strict standardized medication and regular review; while in severe cases, surgery is required if necessary. There are two carotid arteries, one on the left and one on the right side of the neck. And carotid stenosis is either unilateral stenosis or bilateral stenosis. So should I have surgery for both sides of carotid stenosis? Yes, if both carotid arteries are stenosed bilaterally and both are severe enough to meet the indications for surgery, then both need to be operated. Currently, our team is performing extensive carotid endarterectomy to treat moderate to severe carotid stenosis with good clinical results. Carotid endarterectomy can completely remove the atherosclerotic plaque, restore the lumen of the carotid artery and greatly improve the blood supply, and has become the gold standard for the treatment of carotid stenosis at home and abroad.
