It is not normal for a 19-month-old baby to be unable to speak. Normal babies can use about 18 Chinese characters at 18 months of age and can recognize and point out the names of family members. Babies cry when they are newborns, babble when they are 3-4 months old, understand their own names at 6-7 months old, can say simple words like goodbye and no at 12 months old, and can use 15-20 Chinese characters and recognize and point out family members’ names at 18 months old. However, it may be due to genetic factors, for example, the parents are late speakers; or due to language environment factors, parents have less communication with the baby, the baby lacks a language stimulating environment; or there are organic diseases, such as backward intellectual development, hearing impairment, etc., which may lead to the baby’s relatively late speech compared to children of the same age. Parents are advised to bring their children to the hospital for timely consultation and early formal treatment to minimize the adverse effects of the disease.
