Rib fractures that are displaced do not usually require special treatment, but only protection with a rib band. This is because the main role of the rib cage is to protect the organs in the thoracic cavity. If a rib fracture is single, it does not affect the body or the organs in the thoracic cavity, so surgery is not necessary. In the case of multiple rib fractures with paradoxical breathing, surgical fixation is required, otherwise it is life threatening. Generally, a rib fracture can be recovered in about 4-6 weeks. As long as there is no intrapulmonary infection or pneumothorax during this period, there will be no sequelae later. If there is still pain after 4-6 weeks, it is recommended to go to the hospital for X-ray examination to confirm the degree of recovery and to give symptomatic treatment.
