Currently, the surgical approach for people with pulmonary nodules is mostly minimally invasive, with the possibility of open-heart surgery if their case is complex. Minimally invasive surgery includes thoracoscopic surgery and assisted robotic surgery. Both involve making several small incisions in the chest wall and inserting surgical instruments deep into the chest cavity. Compared with traditional open heart surgery, minimally invasive surgery has less impact on the human body and faster recovery after surgery. Only a few small wounds are left on the patient’s body surface after surgery. Minimally invasive surgery is mostly used when the nodule is small and less difficult to operate; if the patient has a large nodule or if the nodule is growing in an area that is very difficult to peel off through minimally invasive surgery, then open heart surgery can be used. The decision of whether to perform minimally invasive or open surgery for pulmonary nodules should be made by a specialized physician after specific judgment.
