Why the elderly are prone to hernia

There are two main elements in the occurrence of hernia: the weakness of the abdominal wall resistance and the increase of intra-abdominal pressure, which are mutually causal, and the elderly happen to be at a stage of high incidence of this causality. Firstly, with the degeneration of physiological functions, the abdominal wall muscles and tendons gradually relax and the tissues around the inguinal area atrophy and degeneration, reducing elasticity and toughness, which predispose the elderly to inguinal hernia. Secondly, because elderly people often suffer from chronic bronchitis, prostate enlargement, hypertrophy, habitual constipation, long-term chronic cough, difficulty in urination, and straining to defecate, the pressure in the abdominal cavity increases, displacing the intra-abdominal organs to the weak area of the abdominal wall. In addition, ascites caused by heart and lung diseases and liver diseases can also slowly raise the abdominal pressure for a long time. In the elderly, the abdominal wall muscles and tendons degenerate, the strength decreases, plus obesity or long-term illness in bed and other factors, it is easy to lead to abdominal wall muscle atrophy and suffer from hernia.
