Why is it more important for older people to have early surgery for hernias?

Nowadays, living conditions are getting better and better, the average life expectancy is getting longer and longer, and more and more hernia occurs in the elderly. In our daily work, we often encounter some elderly people with hernia, including their family members, who have the following thoughts: on the one hand, we hear that it is a minor disease, most of them are not painful, it seems to develop quite slowly and probably has no effect; on the other hand, since they are so old and some of them have many chronic diseases, surgery should be very risky, so they should delay it as long as they can. If you can, you can. Then the question arises: Is the strategy to deal with hernia in the elderly really to put it off as long as possible? It is not known that a hernia is a hole in the fascial layer of the belly and no adult hernia has ever been cured without surgery. The hernia develops rapidly from time to time in some cases, sometimes with obvious distension and pain, and a few of them suddenly become entrapped and lead to intestinal necrosis, and later on the hernia becomes bigger and the symptoms become more and more serious, and it becomes more and more urgent to have surgery, but as we get older, various chronic diseases such as hypertension become more and more serious, the risk of surgery becomes bigger and bigger, the effect of surgery becomes worse and worse, and the complications of surgery become more and more frequent. This situation can be aptly summarized by the phrase “small holes are not mended, big holes suffer”. There are also some hernias that develop more slowly, but they gradually develop localized distension and pain, affecting mobility, and later indigestion affecting appetite, slowly affecting each other’s control of various chronic diseases and health conditions, unknowingly participating in the action that eats away at our health. In short, we must face up to this reality: having a hernia will affect health, and dragging it to the back may cause problems, either quickly or slowly; the later the surgery is in the elderly, the more risky and troublesome it is, and the consequences of dragging it can be large or small; as long as there are still conditions for surgery, we should operate as early as possible without hesitation. If you don’t mend a small hole, you should have an early surgery to repair it; if you pull it hard, it will be easy to break it, so avoid tension and it will get better faster. Hernia surgery is not difficult, but it is not simple to do well; fine anatomy is standardized, and specialist surgery is less troublesome. Let’s pay more attention to the health of the elderly, let’s do our best to take care of their health together, and wish all our readers good health!
