Some patients with lumbar disc herniation need to use internal fixation during surgery, mainly because the surgery changes the structure of the lumbar spine itself and needs to rebuild its stability. 20% of patients who undergo simple lumbar disc removal surgery have recurrence of varying degrees, and the common cases are: multi-segment lumbar disc removal; recurrent lumbar disc herniation surgery; and those who engage in physical labor without systematic rehabilitation after surgery, such as drivers, porters, and long-term standing labor. The reason for this is that the stability of the segment has been destroyed. In these patients, internal fixation and fusion are required along with disc removal to stabilize the spine and reduce the recurrence rate.
