ERCP for extraction of common bile duct stones

The choice of mesh basket or balloon extraction depends largely on the experience and preference of the surgeon. For example, mesh basket extraction is used as the first choice in Europe and Japan because it is stronger and has more pulling force than balloon, but due to the structure, mesh basket is not However, due to its structure, the mesh basket does not easily grasp smaller stones, especially if the nipple incision is inadequate or the stone is larger than expected, and mesh basket extraction may result in stone impaction. Several studies have shown similar success rates for mesh baskets versus balloon extraction for stones less than 1.1 cm in diameter, with no statistical difference in complications. In case of difficult retrieval by mesh basket, laser lithotripsy can also be used to further solve the more difficult retrieval, therefore, in practice, the size of the stone and the experience of the surgeon need to be taken into account to reasonably select the retrieval method.
