Palatoplasty is usually closed intraoperatively with absorbable sutures, which can be left in place. Whether absorbable sutures or ordinary silk sutures are used, the sutures will basically fall out on their own by about a month. Even though absorbable thread is used, the shedding is not due to the absorption of the sutures, but the presence of the sutures is an irritation to the tissues anyway, and when the sutures fall off on their own, more scar tissue will eventually be formed, and more scar formation will occur than in patients who have their sutures removed in about 13 days, so it is still recommended that the sutures be removed. Of course, some patients do not return in time to shed their sutures automatically after discharge, but the scope of scarring and the amount of scarring in the long term will increase significantly, so it is still encouraged to remove the sutures after surgery.
