The word glaucoma comes from the Greek word glaukos, which means light blue, blue-gray, as in the color of the eye when the pressure in the glaucoma eye is high. Modern medicine translates glaucoma as glaucoma according to the characteristic manifestations of the disease and blindness of the patient.
Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the pressure inside the eye is intermittently or continuously elevated, and is one of the three major blinding eye diseases that cause human blindness. Persistent elevated intraocular pressure can cause damage to various parts of the eye and function, and if left untreated, the visual field may be completely lost and lead to blindness.
I. Common symptoms of glaucoma
The symptoms of glaucoma are caused by elevated intraocular pressure and optic nerve dysfunction. For example, the attack of closed-angle glaucoma is often preceded by a sudden increase in intraocular pressure caused by anger and fatigue, and the appearance of iris, eye pain, headache and nausea, vision loss, eye congestion and tearing.
Second, the harm of glaucoma
Glaucoma damage to the visual function is irreversible and is the second blindness-causing eye disease; glaucoma damage to the optic nerve is insidious, with no obvious symptoms at the beginning, and is found at an advanced stage. The causes of glaucoma leading to blindness are related to the lack of awareness of the disease, often missing the best time for treatment; after surgical treatment, ignore the follow-up observation, regular monitoring, thinking that everything is fine. In fact, glaucoma is glaucoma once you have the disease for life, unlike cataracts that have been done on it. It is recommended that patients with glaucoma must listen to their doctors and actively strive for early and effective treatment to minimize the damage to visual function.
Third, the treatment of glaucoma
Glaucoma treatment is mainly to prevent damage to the optic nerve by lowering the intraocular pressure. At present, there are three more effective methods to control IOP: medication, laser treatment and surgery. In general, glaucoma early with drug therapy method or laser therapy method, if these two methods can not control the IOP at the ideal level, must be timely surgery, because the high IOP damage to the optic nerve is irreversible.
IV. Early detection of glaucoma
Many patients with glaucoma, especially open-angle glaucoma, have no obvious symptoms, so it is easy to miss the disease and regret for life.
1. Those who have a family history of glaucoma;
2.Common symptoms of glaucoma, eye swelling and pain, headache, rainbow vision, vision loss;
3, one eye is identified as glaucoma, the other eye should be highly alert, early examination;
4, suffering from glaucoma-related systemic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, hypotension, etc.;
5, suffering from other eye diseases related to glaucoma, such as high myopia, high hyperopia, eye tumors, etc;
V. Prevention of glaucoma
1, keep a relaxed mood, avoid excessive emotional fluctuations.
2, pay attention to eye hygiene, do not overuse the eyes.
3, regular life, appropriate amount of physical exercise, work and rest.
4, a light diet, drinking no more than 1000 to 1200 ML of water per day, and no more than 400 ML of water at a time.
5, glaucoma family and risk factors, must be regularly examined, once there are signs of the onset of the disease, must actively cooperate with the treatment, to prevent the sudden loss of visual function.
