Natural cycles, with no medication and only one follicle, can sometimes result in egg retrieval. Women using assisted reproductive technology who are using natural cycles, no medication, and only one follicle can usually have successful egg retrieval if that follicle is healthy. With the natural cycle method of assisted reproduction, no medication is used, the patient can minimize the effects of external medications, and the follicle grows and develops naturally, often resulting in a better quality egg. Eggs from natural cycles are better able to assist in conception and produce a healthy child in the future. Patients who use natural cycles without medication have only one follicle, and if this follicle is unhealthy, egg retrieval is usually not possible. If egg retrieval is successful, the quality of the eggs obtained is often poor and the chances of successful fertilization are low.
