Can carotid endarterectomy be performed in advanced age?

Carotid artery stenosis is a relatively typical cerebrovascular disease, and the presence of carotid artery stenosis has been shown medically to be one of the main causes of problems such as cerebral infarction and stroke. This is because when the carotid artery becomes narrowed or occluded, it can affect the blood supply to the brain. Therefore, when the problem of carotid stenosis occurs, it is recommended to go to the hospital to receive regular treatment in a timely manner, and more serious cases can be treated with carotid endarterectomy. Can carotid endarterectomy be performed at an advanced age? Many people think that they are too old for surgical treatment. However, this is not the case. Generally, cerebrovascular diseases such as carotid stenosis are more common in the 60s, 70s, 70s and 80s, which can lead to irreversible damage if the cerebral blood supply is not treated in time. Therefore, the age for carotid artery stenosis stripping surgery is not a critical issue, but rather depends on the patient’s physical condition. It is possible that some elderly patients with carotid stenosis may not have the physical conditions to tolerate this surgery because they are weaker and have poorer body function in all aspects, such as declining heart, lung and kidney function, so it is generally not recommended. However, if the patient has no special underlying disease and the heart, lung and kidney functions are normal, he or she must go to a regular hospital for carotid stenosis stripping surgery in time to control the disease early and reduce the damage. The danger of carotid stenosis should not be underestimated, and treatment should not be neglected in any way. And it should be reminded that if the carotid artery stenosis is still optimistic, only carotid artery stripping surgery is needed. In the case of severe carotid stenosis, or even complete occlusion of the carotid artery, intracranial and extracranial vascular bypass surgery is required.
