Why do I weep when I have a foreign body in my eyelid?

A foreign body in the eyelid can stimulate the lacrimal glands to secrete tears, leading to tearing, for the same reasons as a real foreign body entering the eye. The main reason for the secretion of large amounts of tears is to facilitate the removal of the foreign body, as well as to cleanse the eye and protect the conjunctiva and eyelids from damage, as a natural physiological reflex.
