Bunions are a relatively common clinical condition in patients. Most bunions are caused by genetic factors, but a few are secondary. Patients with bunions can be treated with minimally invasive surgery. The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia or epidural anesthesia, and the bunion is first removed from the medial aspect of the bunion joint. If the medial bunion is heavily osteophytic, the bony part of the bunion can be removed using the cutting head of a minimally invasive instrument. The medial head of the medial bunion muscle is then identified on the lateral aspect of the bunion joint. The bunion is then cut with a minimally invasive cutting head, and after the cut, a local compression dressing can be applied. The patient should be instructed to reduce activity after surgery to avoid recurrence.
