Xiao Chaihu Tang is used for the treatment of shao-yang (one of the six meridians of typhoid fever, which is between the surface and the inside of the body) syndrome of typhoid fever, gynecological stroke, heat entering the blood chamber syndrome, as well as jaundice, malaria, and so on. Xiao Chai Hu Tang is composed of Chai Hu, Scutellaria baicalensis, Radix et Rhizoma Ginseng, Radix et Rhizoma Glycyrrhizae, Radix et Rhizoma Pinelliae, Radix et Rhizoma Pinelliae, Radix et Rhizoma Ginger, Radix et Rhizoma Zizoma Ziziphi, and it has the efficacy of conciliating the Shao Yang (treating heat illnesses of the outside world where the evil lies between the surface and the inside). In the formula, Chai Hu rises and disperses, Scutellaria baicalensis clears heat, both of which are effective in resolving the evil of Shao Yang, Semixia and Ginger have the effect of harmonizing the stomach and lowering rebelliousness (regulating stomach qi and making the upwardly rebellious qi descend) and stopping vomiting, while Ginseng and Jujubes benefit the qi and strengthen the spleen (regulating the qi of the spleen and stomach), and Radix et Rhizoma Glycyrrhizae harmonizes all the medicines (regulating the properties of different Chinese medicines). Xiao Chaihu Tang can be used to treat Shao Yang syndrome of typhoid fever, which is characterized by cold and heat (body is hot and cold at the same time), bitter fullness in the chest and hypochondrium (feeling fullness and discomfort in the front and sides of the chest), a silent desire to eat and drink, upset stomach and vomiting, dry pharynx, bitter taste in the mouth, dizziness, and a stringy pulse. Xiao Chaihu Tang can also be used to treat stroke in women, where heat enters the blood chamber, manifesting as a fitful interruption of menstrual flow, sometimes with episodes of chills and fever; and to treat jaundice, malaria, and other internal injuries and miscellaneous diseases that are part of the Shaoyang syndrome. The adverse effects of Xiao Chaihu Tang have not been clarified, and allergy sufferers should use it under the supervision of a physician.
