There are no warning signs of early prostate cancer.
However, similar to BPH symptoms, once a tumor causes the prostate to swell, or spread to adjacent organs, it may cause the following symptoms:
- frequent urination, especially increased nighttime urination
- Difficulty urinating
- Incompetent or interrupted urine flow
- Leakage of urine when laughing or coughing
- Inability to urinate standing up
- Pain or burning sensation during urination and ejaculation
- Hematuria or bloody semen
These are not symptoms of the cancer itself, but are caused by urethral obstruction caused by the growth of prostate cancer.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia and urinary tract infections may also cause these symptoms.
If prostate cancer is advanced, it may also have the following symptoms:
- Dull pain or stiffness deep in the pelvis, lower back, ribs, upper femur, and bone pain in these areas
- Weight loss, loss of appetite, weakness, nausea or vomiting
- Swelling of the lower extremities
- weakness or paralysis of the lower extremities, often with constipation
