The menstrual cycle can be divided into phases and the ovaries can be divided into follicular, ovulatory and luteal phases. Follicles usually begin to grow on day 3-5 of the menstrual cycle and grow slowly from about 1.5 to 1.9mm until the follicle matures. Follicles normally grow at a rate of 2mm per day.
On the twelfth day of menstruation, the follicle size is about 12-18mm, so a follicle of 9 x 12 on the twelfth day of menstruation is normal. Normal mature follicles are about 18 to 25 mm in size. follicle monitoring requires regular and continuous checkups, and follicle monitoring on a single occasion is of less value and requires dynamic observation.
