Under normal circumstances, post-extraction swelling may return to normal after 5~7 days of tooth extraction. In case of post-extraction complications such as chronic infection or acute infection, the swelling usually lasts for a longer period of time and does not subside on its own, as follows.
1. Under normal circumstances: the extraction process is more traumatic, especially after flap surgery, there may be postoperative swelling, usually after 5 to 7 days to return to normal.
2. In case of disease:
(1) Chronic infection: for the residual tooth fragments, bone fragments, tartar and other foreign objects and residual granulation tissue caused by infection, there may be congestion and edema of the wound, which can not subside on its own, and need to be thoroughly scratched and rinsed alveolar fossa, so as to make the alveolar fossa to re-form a blood clot and heal.
(2) Acute infection: Acute infection after tooth extraction can cause infection in the maxillofacial space, causing swelling, which cannot subside on its own, and requires incision and drainage combined with the use of antibacterial drugs, such as cefazolin.
