Coffee consumption by pregnant women may have an effect on the fetus.
In general, coffee intake is not recommended for women during pregnancy. If coffee is drunk once in a while, the effect on the fetus will be relatively small; if coffee is drunk in large quantities, it may lead to abnormal fetal development and consequences such as miscarriage and preterm delivery.
1. Abnormal fetal development: In early pregnancy, if pregnant women drink a lot of coffee, the caffeine may be absorbed by the fetus through the placental barrier, which may lead to abnormal fetal neurodevelopment or malformations; drinking a lot of coffee in late pregnancy may lead to high fetal excitability, which may affect fetal sleep and normal development in the uterus.
2. Miscarriage and preterm labor: Once a pregnant woman ingests too much coffee, the caffeine in coffee may also cause uterine smooth muscle excitation and contraction, leading to uterine contraction and causing miscarriage or preterm labor of the fetus.
Therefore, it is recommended that pregnant women do not ingest coffee or caffeinated foods and beverages, and should seek medical attention if they feel unwell.
