Subtotal hysterectomy is more extensive and relatively more damaging than total hysterectomy. The extent of removal of the uterus is different between subtotal hysterectomy and total hysterectomy. Subtotal hysterectomy preserves some of the cervical tissues, while total hysterectomy does not preserve the cervical tissues and removes the cervix and part of the vaginal part of the cervix at the same time as the uterus is cut. Due to the difference in the scope of the surgery, total hysterectomy involves the uterus, cervix, and part of the vagina, and therefore is relatively more extensive and a bit more damaging to the body than subtotal hysterectomy. Since subtotal hysterectomy preserves the cervix, there is also a risk of cancerous changes in the cervix and regular cervical screening is required every year. If the residual cervix becomes diseased at a later stage, it will be more difficult to operate on the cervix alone since the uterus has already been removed.
