Children with rhinitis are more dangerous than adults!

World Love Nose Day 2018 is approaching, and this is also the season when various types of influenza, rhinitis, asthma and other diseases tend to recur. Since children’s immune mechanisms are not well developed, infants and children have shorter nasal cavities than adults, no nasal hairs and tender mucous membranes, which make them more susceptible to infection. Children have more colds each year, of which 0.5% to 5.0% will develop into nasal sinus infections, such as chronic rhinitis, sinusitis, and even other diseases.

Since children do not mainly eliminate nasal mucus, the backflow of nasal mucus in sinusitis is more serious than that in adults, which can easily cause otitis media, inflammation of the throat and lower whistle diseases, such as asthma and bronchial asthma. Long-term digestive disorders and malnutrition can easily cause developmental disorders in children (yellow face, thinness, height, etc.), etc. Therefore, pediatric rhinosinusitis is more harmful than adult rhinosinusitis. Therefore, pediatric rhinitis must attract the attention of parents and take their children to the hospital for treatment as early as possible.

Generally speaking, rhinitis has the following complications: sinusitis: due to long-term rhinitis not effectively treated, the inflammation of the nasal mucosa spreads to the sinus mucosa, forming sinusitis.

Bronchitis, bronchial asthma: spread to the bronchi causing allergic bronchial lesions accompanied by a persistent, long-lasting cough.

Secretory otitis media: Rhinitis leads to hypertrophy of the inferior turbinate, which compresses the pharyngo-drum canal and affects pharyngo-drum ventilation and drainage. The air in the middle ear cavity is gradually absorbed by the mucosa, causing dilatation and stasis of blood vessels in the middle ear mucosa and fluid accumulation in the tympanic chamber, resulting in hearing loss, tinnitus and a feeling of stuffiness, causing hearing loss in children.

Pharyngitis: Long-term exposure of the throat to nasal mucus, viruses and bacteria cause inflammation, and symptoms such as foreign body sensation and itching in the throat.

Adenoiditis: Long-term inflammatory stimulation can also lead to adenoid hypertrophy, resulting in a special “adenoid face”, which causes the jaw bone to become longer, the palate to be high arched, the upper lip to be short and thick, the upper incisors to protrude, and the facial muscles to be less mobile, much like a piggyback. Once formed, it is difficult to recover.

Other complications caused by rhinitis are: due to prolonged nasal congestion without ventilation, inhalation difficulties, triggering sleep apnea syndrome; patients with enlarged inferior turbinates, lack of oxygen during sleep, serious can cause cerebral infarction, sudden heart attack, etc., individual patients and even sudden death; currently, China’s nasal disease patients are conservatively estimated at more than 300 million. The incidence rate of nasal diseases in China is about 37%, which is currently increasing by 20-30 million every year. About 90% of nasopharyngeal cancers are caused by the deterioration of rhinitis for a long time. Therefore, rhinitis should not be taken lightly and should be treated promptly.

However, rhinitis in children is more dangerous than rhinitis in adults, but the timely treatment of rhinitis in children is more curable than in adults. Therefore, parents should pay early attention to rhinitis in children, early prevention, early detection and early treatment.
