When to check for anemia during pregnancy

A routine blood test can usually be used during pregnancy around the third trimester to determine whether a pregnant woman is anemic. In the middle of pregnancy, both the mother’s and the fetus’s need for iron increases significantly, and the mother is susceptible to anemia, of which iron deficiency anemia is the most common. It may be caused by poor absorption and utilization of iron or insufficient intake of dietary iron, etc. It usually needs to be checked in the third trimester of pregnancy. Mild anemia has little effect on pregnant women, but in severe anemia, the fetus can be stunted or even stillborn due to lack of blood and oxygen. At the same time, the mother’s own resistance will be lowered due to anemia, which may even be life-threatening during delivery. Therefore, pregnant women should go to the hospital for regular checkups and take timely measures to treat anemia if it exists.
