A study by Dr. Tack at KU Leuven, Belgium, confirmed that psychosocial factors and somatization (recurrence of diverse and variable somatic symptoms without a definite organic basis) are the main determinants of the severity of functional dyspepsia symptoms, rather than gastric sensorimotor function. Psychosocial factors and somatization have a more significant impact on the severity of functional dyspepsia symptoms and weight loss than gastric sensitivity, and thus functional dyspepsia should perhaps be considered more of a psychological disorder.
