A study conducted by researchers at the Hungarian National Institute of Medical Rehabilitation evaluated the role of correcting vitamin D deficiency in controlling epileptic seizures and published the results in a recent issue of the journal Epilepsy & Behavior. Thirteen patients with drug-resistant epilepsy were included in this study, and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were measured and vitamin D3 was given to bring them to normal levels. Whether vitamin D3 could affect seizure frequency was assessed by comparing the number of seizures before and after 90 days of treatment. It was found that the number of seizures was significantly reduced with vitamin D3 supplementation, with a mean seizure reduction of 40%.
