How accurate are syphilis test strips

When using whole blood samples, this syphilis test paper has a sensitivity of 74%-86% and a specificity of 96%-100%.

Syphilis test strips mainly use immunochromatographic techniques to detect specific antibodies to the syphilis spirochete in the body. Syphilis patients, whether cured or not, are positive for lifelong antibodies, and using positive syphilis test strips, it is impossible to differentiate between an active syphilis infection, or a former syphilis infection that has been cured. The window period of syphilis is difficult to detect and accuracy is difficult to determine.

Syphilis test strips are only 74%-86% sensitive and 96%-100% specific for syphilis spirochetes when measuring whole blood samples, and 74%-90% sensitive and 94%-99% specific for serum samples.

If you suspect syphilis infection, it is recommended that you go to the dermatology department of a regular hospital for syphilis testing.
