How IV fluids work

Intravenous infusion is a common clinical treatment measure and basic operation, which requires strict aseptic operation. The operation procedure of intravenous infusion includes basic preparation, checking and checking, venting, sterilizing and puncturing, adjusting drip rate and removing the needle. 1. Basic preparation: Wash hands, wear masks, etc., prepare infusion supplies and medication according to doctor’s instructions, and assess whether the patient’s skin is suitable for puncture. 2. Checking and verification: including the patient’s name and other personal information, the name of the solution, the dose and concentration, etc.; ask again whether there is a history of allergy to the infused drug, and confirm the need for skin test, skin test first, and negative skin test before infusion. 3. Infuser venting: first check the expiration date of the infuser and whether the package is intact, connect the infusion tube and hang up the bottle, exhaust the air in the catheter and needle, and assist the patient to take a comfortable lying position. 4. Sterilization and puncture: choose a suitable vein and tie a tourniquet, routinely disinfect the skin; again exhaust, check and puncture, see the return of blood and then parallel to the needle a little, fix the needle handle, loosen the tourniquet, open the speed regulator, and then fix the needle adequately to see a smooth drip. 5. Adjust the drip rate: according to the nature of the drug, the patient’s condition and the requirements of the doctor’s orders to adjust to the appropriate drip rate. 6. Remove the needle: remove the needle in time after the infusion is completed, press the needle hole for 3 to 5 minutes to prevent subcutaneous bleeding. The whole infusion process needs to pay attention to check the information to avoid errors; advise patients not to adjust the drip rate arbitrarily, and call the health care personnel immediately if there is systemic or local redness, swelling, itching and other discomforts.
