Can laparoscopy be used for other procedures besides cholecystectomy?

Gallbladder stones, a disease in which stones occur in the gallbladder, is a common disease in China, with an increased incidence with age and a higher incidence in women than in men. The main symptom of gallbladder stones is recurrent epigastric pain, which seriously affects people’s work and life. Gallstones are also one of the important causes of acute pancreatitis, which accounts for more than 80% of acute pancreatitis caused by gallstones in China. In addition, gallbladder stones have the possibility of gallbladder cancer if left untreated. At present, the most reliable and effective treatment for gallbladder stones is cholecystectomy, and nowadays, all cholecystectomies are basically performed under laparoscopy. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (i.e., the people often say that the abdomen is pierced for cholecystectomy) has been recognized by the majority of patients because of its small trauma and fast recovery, and has become the gold standard for the global surgical treatment of gallbladder stones. Can laparoscopy be used for other surgeries besides cholecystectomy? With the advancement of medical technology and the tireless efforts of surgeons, some common surgeries can now be done laparoscopically, and with the increasing number of surgical cases and the emergence of new advanced equipment, the surgical techniques have become very mature. In addition to surgical results comparable to those of open surgery, the following surgeries done under laparoscopy have advantages that open surgery does not have, such as very small abdominal incisions, minimal trauma, fast recovery, and much lower postoperative complication rates due to minimal trauma. The following are other laparoscopic surgeries commonly performed besides laparoscopic cholecystectomy: laparoscopic lithotomy for gallbladder preservation, laparoscopic choledochotomy for stone extraction, laparoscopic splenectomy, laparoscopic radical resection for gastric cancer, laparoscopic radical resection for colon cancer, laparoscopic radical resection for rectal cancer, laparoscopic ventral hernia repair, laparoscopic thyroid tumor resection, laparoscopic appendectomy, laparoscopic laparoscopic hepatic cyst drainage, laparoscopic liver abscess incision and drainage, laparoscopic partial hepatectomy, laparoscopic pancreatic cyst drainage, laparoscopic partial pancreatectomy, etc.
