Migraine is a type of vascular headache that often develops during adolescence and is more common in women than men. It is characterized by a long duration and recurrent attacks. The clinical manifestations are similar or the same for each attack, and the intervals are as normal. Although there are many kinds of Chinese and Western drugs and methods to prevent migraine, there is no drug or method that can effectively prevent and completely cure migraine attacks. In my clinical practice, I have summarized the methods of migraine prevention and treatment guided by Chinese medicine theory. There are many triggering factors for migraine attacks, such as emotional stimulation, lack of sleep, excessive fatigue, alcohol consumption, certain diet, cold and women’s menstruation. The factors that trigger headache are not necessarily the same for different individuals. Some are dominated by a certain trigger, while others are related to multiple factors. In general, patients who experience recurrent migraine attacks can find the exact trigger by themselves. Once the triggers are clearly identified, they can generally be prevented. Drug prevention: According to the identification of Chinese medicine, for those who are susceptible to qi deficiency, “Yu Ping Feng San” (Astragalus membranaceus 10g, Atractylodes macrocephala 10g, Fang Feng 10g) can prevent migraine attacks by tonifying qi and strengthening the immune function of the body; for those who have qi stagnation and blood stasis as the main manifestation, they can intermittently take the oral medicine “Yi Yao Wan”; for those who have wind-cold as the main manifestation, they can take the oral medicine “Yi Yao Wan”. If the main manifestation of migraine is qi stagnation and blood stasis, you can intermittently take Zhuan Yao Wan orally; if the main manifestation of migraine is wind-cold, you can take Chuan Cha Tiao San orally; if the manifestation of migraine is liver-kidney deficiency, you can take Qiju Dihuang Wan orally; if the manifestation of migraine is damp-heat and liver fire, you can take Gentian Liver Pill orally. Treatment Chinese medicine treatment: In the period of migraine attack, the author’s self-designed “Lifting and opening soup” has significant effect in the treatment of migraine. Drug composition: Chai Hu 10g, Scutellaria baicalensis 10g, Chuan 20g, Angelica dahurica 20g, Radix et Rhizoma ginseng 5-10g, Glycyrrhiza glabra 10g, decoction in water, one dose per day, divided into morning and evening, and it has been clinically verified that this formula is more effective than the control group in the treatment of migraine in terms of recent and long-term efficacy, and has achieved satisfactory results. Ear acupuncture pressure seeds: Ear acupuncture pressure seeds treatment for migraine has the advantages of quick effect, easy operation and low cost. It generally achieves pain relief within 5 – 10 minutes.
