If you are found to be positive for high-risk HPV type 18 after examination, colposcopy is recommended first to find out whether the cervical epithelium is currently lesioned under high-risk HPV infection, and if not, to have regular checkups, as the vast majority of high-risk HPV infections turn negative on their own after about 8-12 months, and only a few develop persistent infection. If a lesion is found after screening, treat it according to the extent of the lesion. If low grade precancerous lesions occur, laser treatment is recommended. If high-grade precancerous lesions occur, cold knife conization of the cervix is recommended for treatment. In either treatment, regular post-operative review is recommended. In addition, women should be screened for cervical cancer once a year.
