Enteral nutrition saves some Crohn’s disease enterocutaneous fistula patients from surgery!

Our department is one of the early units in China to carry out practical total enteral nutrition as a treatment option for Crohn’s disease. At present, total enteral nutrition therapy, a treatment option with almost no side effects and high patient acceptance, has benefited a large number of patients. The following is a young girl with Crohn’s disease who came to our department for surgery because of a long-term irregular treatment, which led to an intestinal fistula combined with abdominal abscess. Before surgery, we did a detailed evaluation and considered that his intestinal fistula and abscess were relatively limited and there was no urgency for immediate surgery, and that his nutritional status was poor and the risk of surgical complications was high. The patient’s symptoms were completely relieved and the abscess and intestinal fistula almost disappeared on MR. This patient is an early example of our use of enteral nutrition therapy, and these successful patients have given us the confidence that this successful treatment protocol will surely allow more Crohn’s disease to avoid the trauma of surgery!
