Effects of sodium valproate

Sodium valproate is a broad-spectrum antiepileptic drug, meaning that the drug works well with any type of epilepsy drug, either as monotherapy or as add-on therapy. Generalized epilepsy including atonic seizures, myoclonic seizures, tonic clonic seizures, atonic seizures, and mixed seizures, and even specific types of syndromes are effective. For partial seizures, the drug is also a more common choice. In addition to being a broad-spectrum antiepileptic drug, it can also be used to treat migraine headaches. As a mood stabilizer, it can be used to treat manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder. Others, such as postherpetic neuralgia and tic disorders in children, can also be treated with sodium valproate, and sometimes blepharospasm-mouth and chin dystonia can occur, with symptomatic improvement with this drug.
