The elderly have “four more” teeth

Good teeth are the basic guarantee to maintain the health of the body, which is especially important for the elderly, the dental characteristics of the elderly are generally manifested as four more: First, there are more gaps: when people reach old age, the gums and periodontal tissue atrophy, so that the gaps between the teeth gradually increase, which is easy to cause food embedding, thus leading to the occurrence and development of root surface caries and the pathological resorption of periodontal tissue, so that the teeth appear defects and loosening and other lesions. The second is that the teeth with residual roots and crowns may be damaged. Secondly, there are many teeth with residual roots and crowns: this is due to the long-term tooth wear, caries, wedge-shaped defects and other reasons not effectively controlled and treated, or due to the patient’s fear of filling and extraction and delayed treatment. Thirdly, the teeth are worn out: after decades of use, the surface enamel (enamel) has been basically worn out, the dentin is exposed, the tooth surface becomes flat and the teeth become shorter. This leads to inefficient chewing and dentin hypersensitivity such as not being able to bite when eating, not being able to eat cold or hot, etc. Some may also develop into pulpitis, periapical inflammation and persistent pain. Fourth, wedge-shaped defects: The neck of the teeth of the elderly can often be seen with a transverse groove defect, the formation of which is mainly due to the local acidic environment of the teeth corrosion, long-term incorrect brushing, etc.. The wedge-shaped defect can cause tooth hypersensitivity, pain and other sensations, and can be followed by complications such as caries and transverse tooth fracture. The way for the elderly to check their teeth by themselves is: look at the color of the gums, the presence of pus, the presence of pressure pain, if there are dentures should be removed and checked. Then open the mouth and check the teeth, pay attention to whether the teeth are loose, whether the roots are exposed, whether there are black spots or cavities on the tooth surface, and whether there is tartar, etc. If there are red and swollen gums, holes in the teeth and food that cannot be easily removed, you should go to the hospital for examination or treatment in time. The residual roots, residual crowned teeth and loose teeth that have been clearly not retained should be extracted as early as possible without any pity. At the same time, it is also important to get a pair of suitable dentures in time.
