The umbilical cord is shed about 10 days after birth. Before the umbilical cord is about to fall off, the umbilical cord stump will have a mild inflammatory reaction with a little blood and pus seepage. Parents need to disinfect the deep part of the umbilical fossa with a medical swab dipped in disinfectant solution 2-3 times a day. Commonly used disinfectant solutions include Amyl iodine until the umbilical cord stump is healed and no discharge is produced after the umbilical cord has fallen off, a process that takes about 10-15 days after birth. Some newborns have gel umbilical cords, which are thicker and have more water content than normal children, so it takes longer for the umbilical cord to dry out and fall off, and the time to disinfect the umbilical cord should be extended.
