Stimulant medications used to treat ADHD are not addictive as long as they are taken appropriately under a doctor’s supervision. And surprisingly, children with ADHD who take medication grow up to be at a much lower risk of addiction and abuse than children who do not take medication. Parents may also be concerned that once the medication is used, it will not be stopped. In fact, the reason we recommend not stopping the medication is because it is good for the long-term relief of ADHD, and not because of a true “dependence” on the medication to be stopped.
