Liver and gallbladder diseases mainly cause pain in the right upper abdomen, sometimes radiating pain in the right shoulder, and severe liver and gallbladder diseases can cause diffuse total abdominal pain. In severe cases, the pain can be diffuse and generalized, while in some cases, the pain may not be noticeable. Most liver and gallbladder diseases are characterized by right upper abdominal pain, such as acute and chronic cholecystitis, liver abscess, cholangitis, etc., which are dominated by right upper abdominal pain. Biliary colic caused by liver abscess, acute cholecystitis or gallstones can sometimes present with radiating pain in the right shoulder. When the disease progresses further, it may cause diffuse pain throughout the abdomen, such as acute purulent obstructive cholangitis and ruptured liver abscess. Certain hepatobiliary diseases may have no obvious pain symptoms, such as liver cysts, benign liver tumors, and some gallbladder stones. Early stage of liver and bile duct cancers also have no obvious symptoms. Patients suspected of having hepatobiliary diseases are recommended to go to the hospital as soon as possible to improve the relevant laboratory tests, such as abdominal ultrasound, CT, liver and kidney functions, etc., so as to make a clear diagnosis in a timely manner and then treat accordingly.
