The dosage of Scrofula Pill is 120g each of Radix et Rhizoma Ginseng (steamed), Oyster (calcined, vinegared), and Fritillariae Cirrhosae (removed from the heart). The original dosage of the formula was four taels for each of the three. Converted to modern measurements, it is 120 g. This formula nourishes yin and clears heat (nourishing the yin fluid and clearing away heat), and resolves phlegm and disperses lumps. It is mainly used in treating scrofula (mainly refers to tuberculosis of the lymph nodes in the neck), phlegm nuclei (lumps swollen up like nuclei under the skin) and gall tumors (equivalent to thyroid tumors) caused by deficiency of yin in the liver and kidney. Yin deficiency of the liver and kidneys (insufficient yin in the liver and kidneys) makes it difficult to control fire, and the phase fire is overflowing, vaporizing and burning the fluids into phlegm. The phlegm nuclei accumulate, thus causing this disease. Xuan Shen in this formula can nourish Yin and clear heat, detoxify and disperse phlegm; calcined oyster can soften and disperse hard lumps. Zhe Bei Mu can clear away heat, resolve phlegm and disperse lumps. The combination of the three makes phlegm go away and heat subside, which is a good formula for dispersing knots.
