Although amantadine can fight against influenza virus, it is only useful against influenza A virus and not for influenza A virus infections that are less common in colds. Amantadine is approved by the state for use in children over one year of age to prevent or treat respiratory infections caused by influenza A virus, and can be used to prevent influenza virus if a family member has a confirmed influenza A infection. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) specifies that amantadine should be used in the treatment of influenza in children under 13 years of age. However, available evidence supports the use of amantadine in children ≥1 year of age. In conclusion, its application is safe and effective in children above 1 year of age. However, it should be emphasized that it only targets influenza A virus.
