The meniscus of the knee is the articular cartilage on the medial and lateral sides of the articular surface of the tibia at the knee joint, which is shaped like a half-moon and is therefore called the meniscus, which can cushion the shock at the knee joint and enhance the stability of the knee joint.
The meniscus of the knee is composed of fibrocartilage. The outer edge of the meniscus is thicker, the inner edge is thinner and sharper, the upper part of the meniscus is concave and connected with the femur, the lower part of the meniscus is flat and adapted with the tibial plateau, and the inner and outer parts are 2 pieces, which are connected with the surrounding ligaments respectively, the inner meniscus is bigger and becomes a C-shape, while the outer one is smaller and becomes an O-shape, which can reduce the friction and protect the knee joint.
The meniscus is located in the joint space of the knee joint, and it is easy to cause damage to the meniscus of the knee joint in sports, therefore, we should pay attention to the protection of the meniscus in normal times, avoid strenuous exercise, and if there are any symptoms of discomfort of the meniscus, it is recommended that we consult a doctor in a timely manner.
