The principle of auricular acupuncture for weight loss and prescription selection

Why can auricular acupuncture treat obesity? Ancestral medicine believes that the internal organs, the skin, the nine orifices, the limbs and the bones are closely connected to the auricle through the meridians, so there is a saying that “the ear is the gathering of the meridians” and “the blood and energy of the twelve meridians and three hundred and sixty-five orifices all go up to the face and go to the orifices”. The ear acupuncture and auricular pressure method aims to promote the smooth flow of the meridians, unblock the blood and qi, promote the lung and dissolve the turbidity, benefit the dampness and lower the fat. Modern medicine believes that the effectiveness of this technique has both physiological and psychological factors. The nerves in the ear are rich in blood vessels, especially in the triangular fossa of the earnail cavity. Stimulating the nerves there has the effect of adjusting the imbalance of metabolism in the body. In particular, stimulation of the vagus nerve can affect the insulin value and suppress appetite to achieve weight loss. Psychological aspects: It is believed that this stimulation can cause the patient to feel dull in time. This is because the patient can antagonize the intention to eat more at will, in order to break the habitual response that promotes his eating intention and start to establish a new conditioned response to the signal to reduce eating. Psychologically this is supportive of weight control.
Ear acupuncture for weight loss so far has several methods such as acupuncture, buried intradermal acupuncture, hydroacupuncture, electroacupuncture and acupressure beans.
The two most commonly used methods are intradermal needles and acupressure beans.
1, buried intradermal needles: 1-3 points are selected each time, and after strict skin disinfection, a snap needle or U-shaped needle is snapped into the skin of the acupuncture point with medium stimulation, and then fixed with adhesive tape. Rotate every 4 to 7 days, alternating between the two ears. During needle retention, whenever before eating or when there is hunger, press with fingers for 2 to 3 minutes, 6-7 times for a course of treatment.
  2. Acupuncture point pressure bean method: After selecting the right acupuncture point, use adhesive tape to apply Wang Bu Liuxing seeds or white mustard seeds or lycopodium seeds on the acupuncture point, twist and press with the index finger and thumb until soreness, numbness or pain is obtained, and also press with the finger until obtaining qi before eating or when there is a feeling of hunger. Change once a week, use both ears at the same time or alternate between the two ears. 5 times is a course of treatment.
