Active bowel sounds are defined as an increase in the frequency of bowel sounds from normal to more than 10 times per minute, but the tone is not particularly high-pitched. It is common in cases of acute gastroenteritis, after taking laxatives and in cases of gastrointestinal haemorrhage.
