When the intestine peristalsis, gas and liquid flow in the intestinal canal with it, producing an intermittent gurgling sound or gas over water sound, called intestinal sounds. Under normal circumstances, the bowel sounds are about 4-5 times per minute. When the patient’s bowel sounds are found to be significantly weakened during physical examination, it indicates that the peristalsis of the intestinal tube at that place is slow or peristalsis has stopped. In the first case, something grows in the intestinal lumen or adhesions occur in the intestinal canal, and peristalsis is slow or absent at the adhesions or below the obstruction. In the second case, hypokalemia or poor blood supply to the intestine is manifested as intestinal paralysis, and the patient presents with diminished or even absent bowel sounds, etc. In addition, in the elderly, the bowel sounds are also diminished when constipation occurs.
