Normal bowel sounds several times per minute

The intestinal peristalsis is followed by the flow of gas and liquid in the intestinal canal, producing an intermittent gurgling sound or the sound of gas passing water, called intestinal sounds, which are caused by lightly pressing the abdomen with the finger. Under normal circumstances, the bowel sounds are about 4-5 times per minute, and their frequency, sound and tone are highly variable, frequent and obvious after meals and sparse and faint at rest, so only the experience of the examiner can determine whether they are normal. When the intestinal wall muscle strain and intestinal peristalsis are weakened due to various reasons, the bowel sounds are weakened or reduced, or only heard once every few minutes, which is called diminished bowel sounds. It is often seen in cases of senile constipation, peritonitis, electrolyte disorders, and low gastrointestinal motility. If there is no bowel sounds heard after 3-5 minutes of auscultation, and there are still no bowel sounds when the abdomen is lightly buttoned with the fingers, the presence of absent bowel sounds is considered to be seen in acute peritonitis.
